The Coffee Upgrade I Actually Kept

A chicory coffee ritual that feels rich, easy, and worth looking forward to.

A warm cup of chicory coffee on a sunlit stone counter with a rust-colored linen napkin.

There was a stretch of life when coffee was less of a ritual and more of an emergency response. Reheat it three times. Drink it standing up. Find it on the counter at 11:17, now somehow cold again, while you're trying to remember whether you have already answered that email. You know—the glamorous stuff.

And listen: there is nothing wrong with a coffee that gets you through the morning. Sometimes that is the exact assignment. But eventually I realized I wanted my cup to feel like something that was for me, too. Not a new rule. Not a wellness personality. Not another thing that came with a list of reasons I should be better by Tuesday. Just a small, genuinely enjoyable upgrade to something I was already doing.

Because the truth is, a morning can be loud before it technically begins. Somebody needs a snack. Someone cannot find a shoe. Your phone has opinions. The dog has an emergency that is almost certainly not an emergency. In the middle of all that, making a drink you actually look forward to can be a tiny little flag in the ground: Hi. I am here too.

That's how the chicory blend made its way into my mug.

The rule: better should still feel better

I am not drinking something that tastes like punishment because the internet says it has a backstory. We are not drinking dirt because it contains mushrooms. We are not pretending a sad beige beverage is a personality trait. If I'm upgrading my coffee, I want it dark, rich, comforting, and a little bit fancy—preferably from a pretty glass while the rest of the house is still quiet.

The Delish Instant Coffee & Chicory Blend is not here to replace every cup of coffee you've ever loved or convince you that regular coffee is the villain. I refuse to make a perfectly good cup of coffee the bad guy just because a new product needs a dramatic origin story. It's a different kind of cup: a chicory-forward blend for the days I want to change up my usual ritual without adding another thing to my list.

For me, that distinction matters. A product can be interesting, beautifully packaged, and full of very persuasive copy, but if it makes the morning more complicated—or worse, less delicious—it has not earned a place in my kitchen. The question is not whether something is theoretically impressive. The question is: do I actually want to make it again tomorrow?

No all-or-nothing nonsense

You do not need to announce that you're “swapping” coffee forever. You do not need to attach a dramatic goal to every choice you make for yourself. You can simply try something because it sounds good, looks good, or makes an ordinary morning feel a little less like whatever's left.

That counts. Actually enjoying the thing is often the entire point.

Some days, I want my usual coffee. Some days, I want something different. Neither choice is evidence of my character, my commitment to wellness, or whether I have finally gotten my life together. It is a drink. A nice drink, ideally. But still a drink. Besty, we are allowed to keep perspective.

A Simple Switch, not a new job

This is my favorite kind of care: it fits into a habit that already exists. Hot water, your favorite mug, a few minutes before the day gets loud. Done. No spreadsheet, no elaborate protocol, no pretending we are suddenly people who wake up at 4 AM for fun.

That is what I mean by a Simple Switch. Keep what you already love. Make it work a little harder for you. A coffee you already make. A shower you already take. A moisturizer you already reach for. If a small upgrade makes the routine feel more like care and less like maintenance, that is worth paying attention to.

And the extra step has to earn its place. If it requires a cabinet full of powders, a blender that needs dismantling afterward, and the kind of conviction usually reserved for a marathon, I am probably out. But a scoop, a stir, a pretty mug, and a better five minutes? I can work with that.

If you're chicory-curious

Read the current product information, make it according to the directions, and give yourself permission to decide based on your own taste. Chicory has its own character; liking it is a preference, not a personality test.

If you're someone who needs her coffee dark and bold, start there. Make it on a morning when you are not already running late, use a mug you love, and let yourself have an actual opinion. You do not need a legal defense for trying something you think you might enjoy. “I wanted it” remains a perfectly valid reason.

The Besty Verdict

My morning coffee does not need to transform my life. I just want it to taste good, feel a little special, and remind me that I'm allowed to have nice things before noon. This chicory blend does exactly what I need it to do: it makes the ritual feel like mine again.

That is the kind of upgrade I am always looking for—not the loudest, most optimized, or most impressive thing in the room. The one that quietly makes an ordinary day feel a little better. The one you keep because you love it. The one that makes you pause, take a sip, and think, damn, okay.

If you have medical, dietary, medication, allergy, or caffeine questions, review the label and ask a qualified clinician for guidance.
